Rick Alden "Skullcandy"

On Tuesday I went to an inspiring lecture from Rick Alden, the owner of Skullcandy. Below are some of the things he said that I thought were inspiring.

“Innovation starts with inspiration”. In his case he was inspired by snowboarders hating their headphones.

He said to look for openings in an industry you love and when you find that opening jump on it before someone else does. His opening was headphones. No headphone companies existed at the time with the technology he envisioned. Also at this time Steve Jobs was making the iPod the hottest thing ever invented. iPod + awesome headphones = ear ecstasy!

“Never been a good idea found behind a desk”. Basically the best ideas come when you’re out with your audience and consumers.

“Business = problem solving”

“Entrepreneur = Personal expression”

“You need to find a problem then make the solution”. Which is exactly what he did with Skullcandy.

His last piece of advise that I thought was so cool was that “You need to get your life in order so that you can be creative”. He used Maslow’s hierarchy pyramid. The bottom is basic stuff like breathing and eating and at the top is problem solving and creativity. So basically get your life in order (bottom of pyramid) then you can be creative (top of the pyramid) Pretty cool stuff.

Stance Socks is Ricks latest venture. He said he had to find something that no one else is doing. Well Rick, I think you are brilliant!
